Snoring Caused by Large Tonsils
Tonsil tissue includes the pair of tonsils at the back of the mouth, the adenoids behind the nose and a final area of soft tissue behind the tongue. Cases of chronic tonsillitis or infection may become difficult to treat using only antibiotics. Surgery to remove the tonsils is sometimes required, especially if a condition known as hypertrophic tonsils develops.
Large tonsils, or hypertrophic tonsils, can frequently cause severe snoring, obstruct breath, difficulty eating, choaking, and sleep apnea. The term hypertrophic tonsils, also referred to as tonsillar hypertrophy, describes tonsils that are so enlarged that they obstruct breathing. Pediatric Otolaryngology explains that hypertrophic tonsils can be most annoying at night, when a child is trying to sleep. The condition can also cause difficulty swallowing.
Enlarged Tonsils can occur as an isolated event or in conjunction with recurrent tonsillitis. If the problem becomes severe, tonsillectomy with adenoidectomy is often recommended. Tonsillectomy is a 3,000-year-oldsurgical procedure in which each tonsil is removed from a recess in the side of the pharynx called the tonsillar fossa. The procedure is performed in response to repeated occurrence of acute tonsillitis, obstructive sleep apnea, nasal airway obstruction, diphtheria carrier state, snoring, or peritonsillar abscess. For children, the adenoids are usually removed at the same time, a procedure called adenoidectomy, or tonsilloadenoidectomy, when combined. Adenoidectomy is uncommon in adults in whom the adenoids are usually vestigial. Although tonsillectomy is performed less frequently than in the 1950s, it remains one of the most common surgical procedures in children in the United States.
